Town of Nelson

In 2019, the Town of Nelson received Clean Energy Community designation from NYSERDA and a $5,000 award.

NYSERDA developed a list of high-impact actions that local governments can take to save energy, cut costs, and earn designation. Each high-impact action is worth points that communities collect upon completion of the action.

Communities that complete four out of the 10 High Impact Actions and meet all other eligibility requirements are: 1. Designated by New York State as a Clean Energy Community 2. Eligible to apply for grants to fund additional clean energy projects at no cost to the local government.

The Town of Nelson completed five of the ten action items earning a total of 2,500 points making them first on the leaderboard for the Central New York region. By far, the highest point earner was Community Choice Aggregation garnering 1500 points.

The Town of Nelson is one of 21 municipalities in the region to partner with the Municipal Electric and Gas Alliance (MEGA) to provide competitive, fixed-price electricity to its residents and small businesses through a Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) program. Starting in July 2019, the CCA offered the Town of Nelson residents and small businesses 100 percent renewable electricity at a fixed price of $0.05435 per kilowatt hour for 36 months.
