The Solar Up Now New York (SUNNY) Act just passed the Senate and Assembly!!!

What the bill does: it legalizes small, plug-in solar panels for New York residents.

Plug-in solar panels are portable units that allow residents to generate renewable energy by connecting to any household outlet or power source.  The electricity generated from the solar panels feeds into your grid through the power cord.

Your Electirc Service Company may not charge any fee related to the device or for feeding energy back into the utility electric grid.

Where to purchase the portable Solar Panels.

Balcony solar companies manufacture plug-and-play photovoltaic systems designed for apartment dwellers and renters. These kits typically mount to balcony railings and plug directly into standard wall outlets to offset your daily baseline electricity usage.

We are not endorsing any of these companies but here are a few more popular ones:

  • Craftstrom: Specializes in plug-and-play balcony kits with “zero export” features that prevent electricity from back-feeding into the grid. This often bypasses complex utility interconnection agreements. Check out their systems on the Craftstrom store.
  • Bright Saver: A US-based non-profit aiming to expand plug-in balcony solar to American households with highly accessible, low-cost options. Learn more via Bright Saver.
  • EcoFlow PowerStream: Offers sleek, urban-focused balcony setups that combine solar generation with integrated battery storage. Browse their setups on the EcoFlow website.
  • Anker: Known for portable energy storage, their “Solarbank” balcony systems allow you to store generated daytime power for evening use. Learn more on the Anker home page.
  • Sungold Solar: Provides lightweight, customizable balcony systems with varied aesthetic designs to blend into urban apartments. Explore their offerings on Sun Gold Solar
